How do I Become a Police Officer?

Some individuals decide to become police officers when they are very young, while others come to the realization later. Either way, there are number of steps to be taken if someone wants to become a police officer, and the earlier you get started, the better. A career in public service can be diverse, challenging, and fulfilling for those who are able to make it through the highly competitive process. Opportunities in law enforcement are incredibly varied, from urban police to rural sheriffs.

If someone wants to become a police officer, he or she should start with education. Police departments require a basic high school education, and additional training such as an Associates or Bachelors degree is recommended. A number of colleges offer criminal justice programs for individuals interested in becoming a police officer. Most of these programs involve education in human behavior, legal issues, computer systems, and a variety of other subjects which assist law enforcement officers. The more advanced your training, the more successful your application as a police officer will be. This training will also serve you well in the field.

Policing requires a high state of physical and moral fitness. Participating in organized sports will condition your body and also serve you well as you apply to a police department. Police officers must also pass a background check, and people with extensive traffic violations, drug convictions, or other indiscretions will likely be rejected. To be accepted as a police officer, you should use common sense, and avoid getting involved in potentially illegal or dangerous situations.

When you are ready to apply to a police department, you will have to sit for the civil service examination. The civil service exam is administered through the police department you are applying to. If you are concerned about the examination, many companies offer study guides which can help you get a higher score. The civil service exam is offered whenever a department has openings, and some departments also offer it on a regular basis to establish a pool of eligible recruits.

You will also take a physical exam which tests agility, strength, vision, and hearing. If these tests are passed successfully, you will take drug and lie detector tests and began a series of interviews with the police department. If accepted, you will be sent to the police academy, a program which ranges from three months to one year. The police academy will prepare you fully for your job as a police officer.

Police officers are expected to pursue continuing education as well, and attend yearly seminars and workshops to this end. The law enforcement community must constantly adapt to changing needs, and this ensures that police officers are updated on current legal procedure and cultural sensitivity. Advanced training allows police officers to better serve the communities they work in, and to retain their edge as law enforcement professionals.

In some states, it is possible to attend a police academy without being affiliated with a specific police department. If you are unsure about the area in which you would like to work, you can attend the police academy first and then apply into police departments as a fully trained police officer. With a growing population come growing demands on law enforcement, which translates into increased opportunities for individuals interested in a career in law enforcement. Pursuing your dream of becoming a police officer can be a lengthy process, but well worth it at the end.

I'm 25 years old and am a Criminal Justice Major in college. I have never committed a crime and have wanted to be a police officer since I was a kid. However, I am only 5'3 and weigh 92 pounds. Could I still be a police officer?

I'm 14 and I want to join the military, no matter what. But my mom and dad would not agree. What should I do and what subjects should I take to join the military?

I am 16 years old and in grade 11. I am considering to become a police officer but I do not know in which direction to go. I am looking into joining the military but do not know if it is going to be the right decision.

When you say that if you have ever even "tried" drugs harder than marijuana you will be automatically disqualified, I assume that this would be a question asked on a lie detector test. I have a son who experimented in his younger years, but is now 29, and is a different person. Does this mean a career as a law enforcement officer would be out for him?

Why on earth would anyone ever want to become a police officer?

By anon334499 — On May 13, 2013

I'm 17 years old and a week ago I ran away from home to live with my grandma (1,000 miles away). The police in the whole state were searching for me, but I didn't know until I went to the police in the town where I came to. So they brought me home to my parents, and I've just gotten home from the police, where they said I won't be able to become a police officer, because being a runaway is that serious and like a crime. Is it true?

Will it really affect me getting a job in law enforcement, or do I not have to worry? Do I have a chance, at least?

By anon332895 — On May 01, 2013

I am 23 years old and I was considering becoming a police officer. I have one misdemeanor on my adult record for a weapons charge. I had a baton in my car and had no idea it was illegal. I also got arrested as a juvenile for shoplifting. I have two points on my driving record. I was wondering if I clear my driving record and stay out of trouble, is it still possible that I can become a cop? The last time I was arrested was almost five years ago.

You must be a permanent resident who is eligible for and have applied for citizenship to become a police officer. Many police departments require applicants to be citizens.

I am a 17 year old boy and I want to join the Indian police services and want a high post in the services. What qualifications do I need after passing 12 with a good percentage?

By anon316822 — On Jan 30, 2013

Keep your records clean, with no tickets, DUIs or credit problems. If you're still in high school, get good grades and stay out of trouble. These are the major disqualifiers for being a cop.

By anon316719 — On Jan 30, 2013

It is easy to become a police officer in the UK.

You do not need any formal education and only a very basic level of intelligence. Also, you will need to be untrustworthy, lazy, dismissive and very unhelpful towards people.

If you have these attributes you are basically halfway to being a police officer!

I'm Chloe and I'm 14. I have only recently been looking into law enforcement. I would really enjoy becoming a police officer and realizing I need to work hard in school to get it has really boasted my motivation. Now I want to go to school and work hard, not talk through my lessons.

I don't do drugs or have a criminal record and I'm glad my dad pushed me to pick sensible options for school. My dad gave me the idea of being a prison officer not long ago and I thought there was more choice in what to become in law enforcement, so I have dedicated my work now to trying to achieve good grades for it.

I am 13 and am thinking about what college I want to go to, but this information is helping me a little. I want to be a well educated police officer, but I go to an alternative school. Will that be on my record when I grow up and will they hold that against me if I do sign up for it?

I'm going to be 19 this month and I'm going to start college in January 2013 and I decided I wanted to be a police officer. What are the tests we're going to have to take other than the fitness and physical? Do we have to take English and math tests in order to be a cop?

I am a 17 year old girl and I really want to be a police officer. I've known since I started high school that's what I wanted. I'm in my last year (I'm a senior) and want to start training after school. I think that it will be fun to do and I can help people understand the law better and help those who need to be protected.

I have three nieces and two nephews whom I will do anything for. The oldest is four and the youngest is two months.

To everybody saying they have "this and that" in the past: Change who you are, prove that you have become somebody different. If you can honestly look somebody in the eye and tell them you are a different person and what you did in the past was silly and reckless, you still stand a chance.

The most important thing is honesty. Be honest about what you've done and why you did it.

You want to know the absolute disqualification? If they catch you not telling them something.

By anon265856 — On May 03, 2012

I am 15 years old and have a very great desire to be a police officer, but I'm still in time to to be done because I am only 15 years old. I have to finish high school and academy ranks and start working on any komisarjat. That is to serve my nation since I am in Albania and why it is very difficult. I would like to work as a detective in America.

It was my desire that I would like to realize and hope to one day.

Do you need to speak French to be a police officer?

By anon259670 — On Apr 07, 2012

To all those who are in high school and wondering about a potential law enforcement career, here is some advice:

You may not have been convicted of any crimes, but as you grow older, and especially if you go to college, getting into trouble with the law will become easier and easier. You have to be 20 and 6 months to apply to a department in almost all states, and you must be at least 21 when graduating the academy. This means that from the time you finish high school at 18 until the time you turn 21, you need to work hard and keep your nose out of trouble. Even if you have been convicted of a misdemeanor or have gotten in trouble, go to your local police department(s) website(s) and find the qualifications for the police officer position. It will always detail the limits on hiring.

Be active in your community. Community service is a great way to get involved. With more and more police departments switching over to a community policing model, having good ties with your community is great. In some areas, there may be a program called "police explorers." It is sponsored by the BSA and if you join the program, you will get to know many of the department's officers, learn what policing is actually like, train and sometimes even get to ride along with an officer for part of their shift.

There is not much you can do in high school to get prepped for police work unless you school offers criminal justice electives or career centers. I recommend trying to find a nearby explorer program over any high school courses you can take. However, if there are no CJ courses available, think about taking psychology or sociology as an alternative. Those classes explain a lot of behavior and why people do what they do. Having a foundation in those fields can greatly help you understand how to react to different situations in the field.

Law enforcement is not what it looks like on TV. I remember when I was in high school and I always watched episodes of “COPS” and “World's Wildest,” then when I got into the field, I realized that law enforcement is not what it appears to be on TV. It somewhat depends on what department you go into. Inner city departments will, without a doubt, be very busy and can burn you out within a few years. However, suburbia and less populated areas will mostly be crap calls like people selling things without a permit, or someone threw a hunk of cheese into someone’s backyard and the homeowner thinks that they’re going to be murdered. I’m not saying police work doesn't have it’s fun moments -- it definitely does -- but it is not going to be every day on the job.

Stay away from drugs and alcohol. You will be automatically disqualified if you even try a hard drug (meaning anything other than marijuana). Marijuana use varies by department, but it is pretty much across the board that other than some high school experimentation (e.g., fewer than 5 times), it will disqualify you as well. Alcohol use, while not illegal, can lead to some major problems. If you drink alcohol to overcome personal problems instead of learning to cope with them yourself, then you will have a very difficult time dealing with other people’s problems in the field. Alcohol abuse is a very big problem in law enforcement today, because the job can be extremely stressful.

Be careful about what you put on social networking sites. As these websites have become integrated into society, it is becoming more and more common for departments to look into potential candidates' Facebook pages and whatnot to see what kinds of things they post, how mature the person is, etc. When you are 14 years old, it shouldn't matter much, but as you get older you need to be more and more careful of what you do say. Posting pictures of your 18 year old self with alcohol is a mistake. Posting things about wanting to hurt yourself or other people is a mistake, posting about doing illegal things is a mistake. Keep it clean.

Do not fall into the mentality that most people have about law enforcement. The phrase, “forget the police” has become all too common, and more and more young people are hopping on the bandwagon. Look into police, look into the legal system, and teach yourself about what is actually happening. When you see the videos of police brutality online, or on the news, try putting yourself in the officer’s footsteps. Realize that the police do not make the laws, nor do they have a choice but to enforce them. Keep your mind open.

I hope this advice helped. It is all I can really think of off the top of my head.

Good information in the article and lots more interesting points of view from the comments, too. I've been asked about getting into law enforcement jobs. It's on people's minds these days as jobs are getting scarce, but police departments are down-sizing, too. The good news is that there are so many types of fields available in the law enforcement world.

I'm a 14 year old girl in high school and recently I went for an open day at a nearby college and I chose law as a taster session and in law, we looked at lawyers and "the law" and being a police officer always came up.

I've always wanted to be a csi (crime scene investigator) but I knew I would never get there. I love sports and I've never committed any criminal offenses, so I guess that's good but I don't know what to study at college or do I go to uni and will it cost me to become a police officer? I know it will take a long time to become a police officer but is it worth it?

By anon229985 — On Nov 16, 2011

I am 16 and I am in grade 11 right now. I have never had any sort of criminal charge. I am not into drugs, I am extremely fit. I play soccer, baseball, basketball, and I am a snow cross racer for the CSRA. My eye sight is perfect. I would love to become a police officer.

I need to know the course information for a high school student to lead me in the right direction and give me a head start.

I am also wondering if volunteer hours in my community would give me a head start and help further along the line? I have my firearms license. I know my way around fire arms very well and also know the safety precautions that come along with them.

However, I attempted suicide not too long ago by stabbing myself, however, I'm alive right now but I'm a cutter. I never got therapy or anything. I never took drugs or drink but am struggling with cutting and wanting to do suicide. I want a better life and to help people. Should I be a police officer? --Mercedes

By anon218296 — On Sep 28, 2011

Almost every question here has been answered by the article. Read it. Law enforcement officers are expected to have good common sense and be able to understand written instructions. In fact, the civil service exam always contains reading comprehension questions. So if you post an uninformed question here without really taking the time to read, what kind of impression does that make on those who would help?

A lot of questions are about "what if i got caught doing X ... will that disqualify me?" The only way to find out is to fill out the application and be honest. Own up to what you did. Don't make excuses or try to minimize it. Cops have heard every excuse. Just be honest about what you did and answer the questions. If it was a few years ago ago, and you've been making an effort not to do X, that will help you.

But never lie. Never. It's all bad from that point on, and whatever chance you had, you've lost. A lot of departments will excuse a kid smoking pot as long as it was a certain number of years ago. Or someone getting busted for shoplifting. But if you lie about it, your lie is the reason you will not get hired, and you can forget about any other law enforcement agency as well. Be honest. It's what the job is about.

By anon218146 — On Sep 28, 2011

Folks, re-read the article. It's written very generally, as every state is different, but what is says is true. Educate yourself. Read first-person accounts of police work. Join an Explorer post at a local law enforcement agency. Talk to police officers and deputies. See what they can tell you. Check if there are ride-along programs nearby. Get in good physical condition.

The harder you work in school, the better you'll do on the civil service exam you'll need to pass to get considered for hiring, and it will help you in the academy. The academy is basically a college course that lasts nine or ten hours a day, five days a week, for six months to a year. So the more education you have, and the more practice you have taking tests, the better you'll do.

There is no magic formula. Just make it a goal, and make a list of all the things you can do to reach your goal. It will take you years to accomplish, from the time you first start researching and reading and talking, to the time you get your star or shield to the time you're off probation and have some hands-on experience on the job.

The bottom line is work hard and be honest. If you've made mistakes in life, admit them. Lying is not what any law enforcement agency wants. And it's the fastest way to get fired from any agency. No matter how bad the truth may seem, lying about it will make it ten times worse.

I am 21, soon to be 22 years old and i will be graduating from a four year university with a double major in sociology and criminolgy.

I would like to become a juvenile probation officer and i feel that i am highly qualified for a position in this field considering I've had an internship in the field already as well as two jobs dealing with diverse populations.

I am a good person, but i will admit that i have lived a college lifestyle. I've recently finally decided to permanently quit smoking marijuana because i am coming to the realization that i need to be serious. I've never done any other drugs but marijuana and i do drink occasionally, but never drive.

I have never been in serious trouble with the law, i have a spotless driving record, and etc. My only concern is that there is a polygraph exam that must be taken in order to become an officer and i do not want my truthfulness to disqualify me for a position (hence i plan on admitting to smoking weed in the past), and also i am afraid that my nervousness would cause me to have some false readings.

can someone please provide me with some advice? i am beginning to regret my college social experimentation, and i wish that whoever would interview me would be able understanding.

First, go to university and get a related degree. A bachelors is sufficient. After that, contact local departments and ask about requirements. You will most likely have to pass a physical and written examination to even get an interview at the local police station. All in all, you're looking at about six or seven years preparation.

i always wanted to be in law enforcement, what can i do to be one fast and simple so that i can be a better mother to my child and show her we can do anything even when you're at your all time low in life?

i am active, fit, and hard working. I really want to be a Bellingham police officer. But i am very nervous because i identify as gay. I fear that this will harm my chances of getting hired. I have done everything: stay in shape, gun practice at the range, and almost am finished with my bachelors from western washington university. Would i still have a chance?

RE:#3: You cannot have DUI convictions, that will be an immediate disqualification. Also, having more than six demerit points will disqualify you.

For those of you who want to be a police officer, the best way is attaining a four year university degree in either criminology or sociology. Once you graduate there are endless possibilities to move up in the ranks.

But my family does not want me to become a police officer, and right now I don't want to tell people because I don't know what they will think.

I don't necessarily care what everyone thinks, but I would also like to know what I should do for practice and to prepare? Thanks!

@anon142334: After nearly 20 years with a newspaper, I totally get how dumb people are! LOL. A good police department will have a friendly relationship with the media and when I told the public information officer what our retired receptionist said, "All the drunks have the newspaper on speed dial," he laughed and said, "Yeah, and the police department is number two."

Anyway, I'm grateful every day for the officers who put on the uniform and deal with what I don't want to deal with. I guess the people who are most grateful for what police officers do are the ones they usually don't have to deal with. Take care and stay safe!

By anon142334 — On Jan 12, 2011

I am 17 years old and want to become a police officer. I joined up with Police explorers when I was 15 years old, and let me tell you: being a cop is not something for the faint of heart.

In only the 400+ hours of field experience I've attained, I have seen three people die and have seen several other people severely injured. It stays with you, no matter how hard you try to get rid of it. You can't be afraid to run towards shots fired and you can't get mad at people, no matter how stupid they act. And believe me, people are a lot dumber than you think.

You rarely get thank yous and usually even the people you help show you little respect. But at the end of the day, you know you've helped countless people, and the feeling is great. I love the job and I cannot imagine doing anything else with my life.

It will obviously be different from department to department and there are many departments who see little action if any at all, but beware what you are getting yourself into. Do your homework. That's what I have to contribute.

I have a best friend and he also wants to become a police officer so we planned on studying in the same police school. I am from London, England. I would like to become a police officer, and eventually a detective, in the US. For those who are interested, this is because in the UK, police are crippled by over-excessive paperwork and there isn't exactly much to get in to. Some UK police go to Canada to avoid this, but I would rather head to the US where I feel I could make a difference.

Now for my question. How could I make this transition? Currently, I am studying physics at Queen Mary University of London. I am on a three year course and I intend to see this through. It is after I have finished, when I am 21, that I would like to go to America to join the police. I would be willing to do any extra amount of studying it would take to do so.

Would this be possible and what steps will I have to take to do so. I would be incredibly grateful if anybody could help me with this. Thanks in advance.

By anon137958 — On Dec 29, 2010

@428, at this point you need to respect your parents, but if you're thinking about future, you can condition them. Talk about going into the marine corps, or firefighting, and eventually police doesn't sound so bad.

By anon136712 — On Dec 23, 2010

So, I'm back again. I have previously posted #401 and I have received a response, but now I am looking for some advice about a different part of the issue.

I'm 15, told my parents that i want to be a police officer with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, and they are completely against it. Actually, they said that they won't ever talk to me again, and that they won't allow me to consider them as my parents if I be a police officer. Which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

They want me to do a less dangerous job, but I've wanted to be a police officer since I was six years old. My parents also said that they won't ever help pay for my tuition for University to become a police officer. Then at the end of the conversation, my parents said that I am no longer allowed to talk about being a cop.

So I have no clue what to do about this issue right now. Sometime I want to make a DARE presentation about drugs and alcohol, but I would have to have my parents permission to do this. I would also like to go on some ride alongs with our local police department, but until I can somehow get through to my parents, that's not going to happen anytime soon.

So any advice on how to resolve this issue? It's driving me crazy because I feel that if I be a police officer then maybe I could finally do some good in the world. Even if I just make a small difference, it would be worth it.

When I watch the news all you hear about is people getting abused, killed, people robbing each other, etc, it makes me wonder what this world is becoming. Anyway, please respond! From Jackie

By anon136654 — On Dec 23, 2010

#406 Thanks for the great advice. I've talked to my parents a month or two ago, and they said that they won't ever talk to me, or support me if I choose to be a police officer. This part of it is making it really frustrating.

I don't think that this is the kind of attitude that they are supposed to have towards their child's career choice. They feel the same way towards the army, but actually, they are more resentful towards the army. I know that if I choose a different career, I will regret it for the rest of my life. I really don't have a clue what to do next. From Jackie

P.S Thank you for what you do as a civilian police officer.

In truth, police officers break the law just as ordinary citizens do. The problem is; is that most citizens are on the wrong side of the law.

Break the law and the law will break you.

If you're a police officer, on the other hand, and you break the law, you will receive a few weeks unpaid leave and have your job back with a reprimand in your personnel file.

#401: You can join the Army at age 17 and become a Military Police officer if you wish. I would choose this first, because while in the military you could also get some college under your belt, not just experience being a cop.

But be prepared to not do much police work, depending on where you get stationed. A lot of it is going to civilians now, so you can concentrate on your military role. But anything can happen, you could do nothing but police work your whole time in.

Then, after a few years, if you don't want to be in anymore, you're well on your way to becoming a civilian cop.

It is very "easy" to say the least. Just be smart in your decisions. Listen to what people tell you, and learn how to read people -- very quickly. Good luck.

Experience: Seven years Army Military Police; one year civilian police.

By anon119514 — On Oct 18, 2010

@402: You are 15 years old, and you have a long life ahead of you. My best advice would be for you to follow your dreams. Is the only way you are going to be happy.

Before you make a decision, see what are the pros and cons for each field job. Don't give in to military pressure; you will end up making a mistake.

Police field work is very rewarding, pays well, and you can retire early too, with a nice pension. So just do your homework before making a decision and go for your dream or best job offer you think would be for you. Military work is not for everyone, but the same can be said about police work as well.

In Finland it takes a lot of more time and serious academic studies to become a police officer, than in US. The training takes at least three and a half years plus practical training periods. So the training is at least four years, and usually some more.

I was wondering if I could still become a cop but I feel my past might be an issue on the lie detector test.

I stole when I was young from a piggy bank quarters to play video arcade games. I also did try mushrooms, and weed, which I found out was the nastiest thing ever.

Besides that I have a clean record, I am in great shape (bodybuilding type), am licensed as a boxer, go to university and am very proficient in network information technology.

I have a clean driving record, and know how to drive anything from a car to a truck. Plus I am bilingual in Spanish, and in my area it seems that the Spanish population is growing. So my question is with my past old activity many, many years ago will that be an issue? We are talking about over 10 years ago.

@Jackie: Ask the DARE officer when you ask to help. He or she should be able to tell you everything you need to know about becoming an officer. Good luck!

I am 15 years old and I live in Newfoundland, Canada. I am very, very interested in becoming a police officer. I love to help people and work with the community. I really want to know my first steps into becoming a police officer.

If someone could please tell me I would really appreciate it. I am thinking about getting more involved with DARE next school year, like helping out and stuff. I still have to ask the officer about that. Anyway, any advice would be great! Thanks, Jackie

i called 911 and it wasn't serious so they asked for my information and I'm scared that I'm in the system and that it will affect anything. It's really been hurting me. i want to be a police officer.

I'm 17, and I'm seriously considering becoming involved with law enforcement. I'm going to be a senior next this fall, and i excel in english and history, but my math and science are average at best. I was hoping you'd tell me the difference between a cop and a state trooper, because my mother says state troopers pay over 80k annually. Also, if they would take my size into consideration. I'm 6'5, 265. I currently play varsity football as a lineman. I'll probably play d3 college football, and i was also wondering what classes i should take to make it to the top.

To anyone wanting to be a cop, go speak to a cop with one or two years' service at your local station. They should be happy to talk to you and give you a feel for what the job entails, without having attitudes that are too jaded.

They know more about the current recruitment process wherever you live. Take to heart what they say. It's a hard job, you work crap hours, deal with horrible people, scary and distressing situations and it's not especially well paid.

On the other hand, it can be a rewarding job, too. After a week of dealing with pissy neighbor disputes, you might jail a prolific thief, a drunk driver, or have to smash down a door to let an Ambo crew in to treat an attempt suicide. You can go home after 12 hour night shift, crack open a beer and realize you maybe did make a difference that night.

Of course, the following night you'll be thinking "This job stinks" again, but that's just the way it goes.

i just got out of prison three months ago, where i was brutally raped on several occasions. i then decided i wanted to do everything i could to keep people like that in prison where they belong. however i have a few offenses on my record, such as the one i was previously in jail for which was my fourth DUI offense, as well as a domestic abuse charge, along with a few previous methamphetamine charges. Is there any way i can still become an officer?

By anon93143 — On Jul 02, 2010

you have to be 19 to be a cop. you have to have your green p's, finished year 12 in high school or a certificate 4 at TAFE.

By anon92815 — On Jun 30, 2010

There's a class you can take from former cops who consult with law enforcement. They have some live seminars (cheaper) and on-line/telephone consulting which gives you one on one with a trainer but you don't get to see other students take a mock oral board exam like in the seminar. Mentor Research Group is their name.

331* Very funny. Cops are very educated. Everyone who is in a career is educated -- how the hell do you think they get where they are? And to 343 and 342 you made a GREAT point. If someone's robbing you what the hell are you going to do about it? Call your high school english teacher? Since they're "educated"? Ha.

I am 16 and have recently decided that i wanted to become a law enforcement officer. But i have a few questions. First off about a year ago i got arrested for retail theft but i joined this program that it will erase off your record if you complete it. It's a year long program. Will this affect me?

I have tried marijuana and did it daily but i have been clean for about six months and will never do it again. And last question: what is the best path? I want to become an police officer but also want to make good money everything from classes to take, and also my eyes are not the best.

Thank you for reading and if someone is educated enough to reply, please do.

By anon91375 — On Jun 21, 2010

this is to 331: You're dead wrong if you think a police officer is overpaid. Sure, some might be trigger happy, but when some guy pulls a gun in your face or something of that sort happens what do you think you would do? If cops weren't here then this world would go to hell.

By anon91264 — On Jun 21, 2010

I am a police officer in Southern California. I have eight years on the force. For the past month or so, I have been thinking really hard about quitting law enforcement. I like most of the job but hate the people in management (really only the sergeant. They are not good leaders). Reading some of the comments on this website reminded me how hard I worked to get to where I am now.

For reminding me of that, I want to thank you guys.

Here's the truth about law enforcement. Every department is different. Some will not give a person a chance if there is any past drug use. Most will, as long as the drugs you had used were only marijuana or even a small amount of meth and enough time has passed (three to five years). If you have ever used any LSD, mushrooms, etc., you're done -- become a plumber.

You young kids 14, 15,16ish get involved with the Explorers program at a local PD or join the ROTC at school. Don’t be a nerd and work really hard and you will make a good police officer.

Being a cop is fun. Last night I drove over 80-100 MPH on three separate calls. I arrested a 13 year old for burglarizing a local elementary school and chased after people all night. LOL Makes me wish I was working right now.

By anon91134 — On Jun 20, 2010

does anyone else think it's a little weird that most of the people on this site that want to be cops are either prepubescent foreign boys or people with screwed-up pasts? Kind of makes you wonder what type of people cops really are.

By anon90786 — On Jun 18, 2010

I am a city police officer. For all of the people here who have recently been ticketed for DUI or for fairly recent past drug use, save your breath, and save the police department time as well, because you are wasting their time applying with those things on your record.

If you have any type of drug use or drug related arrest, the police department will not even come close to considering you as a future police officer.

Stop fooling yourself and grow up. Find another profession.

I just graduated from the police academy six months ago, and it was the worst year for police job availability. I have had to move back home with my parents temporarily while looking for work.

Most of my officer friends say to get a job locally and wait it out while the economy recovers, but won't living at home look bad on a background investigation?

I can't afford to live on my own at the moment, although I have in the past. What's my alternative?

By anon90538 — On Jun 16, 2010

To 330: you have to have high school diploma, and at least an associate degree.

By anon90106 — On Jun 14, 2010

LOL. I see all these inexperienced youngsters and people with DUI's asking if they can also become police officers. I always knew most police forces are pathetic in their own right, but seeing garbage that's been spewed on this page just reinforces the fact that cops are generally undereducated, overpaid, trigger-happy buffoons. I hope karma catches up with you all. Good luck.

In response to #13: Check to see if your local law enforcement has an explorer program. that is a good way to get exposed to what law enforcement is all about and get experience. also you will have to attend a law enforcement academy. some are at a local community college or an academy, depending what agency you apply for and what state you live in. good luck. it's an interesting job.

I just need to know all the classes required to be a police officer. What science's do I need? What math? Just A30 or do I need B30 also? Thanks!

By anon84286 — On May 14, 2010

I would highly recommend that you ask these questions at your local police department. I know for a fact that having bad credit, d.U.I, recent convictions or pending convictions will disqualify someone. There may be a few other things.

These minor offenses like trying drugs at an early age won't disqualify you. Or petty crimes as long as you don't repeat them when you're an adult.

I also suggest if you qualify, to take ride alongs in your local departments and ask questions. This career is very demanding and takes much commitment. So to everyone who wants to become a peace officer good luck and never give up.

I am 17 years old, turning 18 in september. Recently I have been heavily exploring the police profession. i am an active member of the local police explorer group and that has really opened my eyes.

About two years ago my father passed away. i had to see him in the hospital in a coma, and it was the hardest thing i have ever had to do.

When i was down there with my "half-brother" he introduced me to marijuana. it made things so much easier, and i eventually turned to that every time a problem arose. it started as a way to cope with very difficult family problems, but then turned into a habit.

Recently i have stopped and have a good three years before the minimum age requirements are met. during this time, under peer pressure, i ate mushrooms twice. i hate them! the worst experience of my life. both of these are choices that i deeply regret.

i guess what I'm asking is should i even attempt to get a career in this field, or give it up completely. if these mistakes have cost me a great life/ rewarding career, i will be devastated. thanks a lot.

How many classes do I have to take to become a police officer?

By anon82278 — On May 05, 2010

I have a prior in a couple things, one being a DUI, however, once I get through criminal justice schooling (I already have a degree in psychology) I am hoping all will be far enough behind me.

I have known a few officers who did make mistakes, none felony crimes of course, who have gone on and become officers. However, based on my record of a lead foot (most written down in the court but still) and two misdemeanors, my chances have been gravely reduced but I am hoping to find a position within the criminal justice system where I can still be in an active role and make a difference in the lives of others.

(P.S. Although not a heavy drinker, I am with a previous poster regarding my DUI-it was one of the best circumstances to ever happen to me! It made me step back and look at my life, deal with my past, and most importantly appreciate and be thankful for all I have in my life and for life itself).

i have a few personal concerns about becoming an officer, most that have to do with my unfair local reputation.

My father was a flint police officer for 23 years (he recently passed away in august. rip.) so i suppose i get more of my inspiration from him. However, my mother hasn't made the best mating decisions, you could say. her ex husband hit an officer a few years back and that officer barely made it out alive.

Unfortunately because i am associated with my mother and she is associated with her p.o.s. ex husband, local law enforcement does not like our family at all. Which I would understand if she was still with him, but she's not and is ashamed of what he did.

I am angry that they don't treat me kindly because I never liked the man in the first place and I feel this guilty by association treatment is completely unfair considering I am not his child, I despise him, and my own father was an officer of the law.

My mother and I have had a few fights when I was younger, nothing that's turned extremely violent. My mother has serious mental issues but is also an amazing liar, so these things have worked against me after she's called police on me.

I've never been convicted of any kind of violence, period. I would never hurt my own mother. But I just feel as if those past experiences would damage my chances of becoming an officer.

I did receive an MIP in 2006 when I was 17. I'm now turning 21 in September. I did go to jail for three days because I was unable to pay my court fines and complete my community service. (i was seven months pregnant at the time and very sick plus had preeclampsia which is why i didn't complete the c.s. i baby sat for my mother to pay my fines, but she never paid me for it so I couldn't pay my fines.)

I've gotten three minor traffic violations, and one speeding ticket but I have no points on my license. I was also involved with hard drugs when I was 17 but have given all that up and never plan on turning back.

I was never caught with or convicted of any drug related crimes. I already plan on being upfront and honest about my dark past as a teen.

I've given up hope in applying to my local departments, given my mother's side of the family's reputation. Not to mention, I wouldn't want to work for them anyway because I feel they pick favorites and allow people they know to get away with serious crimes (domestic violence, alcohol related violations, etc). That's never something my father would have done.

But I am wondering, given my unfair local reputation, is there a current officer out there who thinks if I am completely honest and show my true character (which I think I have very good character, and I hope others do too.) that I could still be hired in by a department? I'm really hoping so.

I do honestly believe I would make a good officer. I think given my dark past, I'm a little more in tune with people's problems and can help out a community (whichever decides to hire me) in big ways. thank you for your time, sorry for the length. have a great day.

I do not do drugs but I have in the past when I was younger. I am currently in college to receive a BA in Social and Criminal Justice and plan on attending a Houston Police Academy once I have the degree.

I have a good driving record and also plan on doing some community service. I am in decent physical shape (not fat but could use some toning up). Do I sound like the type of person who can become an officer of the law?

By anon79973 — On Apr 25, 2010

I'm 27 years old and wanted to pursue a bachelors degree in criminal justice but two years ago I was in court for a felony child abuse charge against me but due to some really different circumstances in the case, the felony was dropped by the DA's motion and i was just charged with a misdemeanor count of child neglect.

I had to serve two years probation and just finished it with no problems last month March 2010.

I was just wondering I recently got out of the military as a 31E, also known as military police and corrections specialist.

I received an honorable discharge for a personality disorder. basically my wife's mother died a while back and her brother shot himself when i was in the army and I was depressed and they sent me home to straighten things out and be there for her.

I was really only depressed from being away from her during such a hard time. I'm doing well now and other than that i do have training from the military for these fields and was wondering. i used to smoke pot and have tried hard drugs occasionally in the past and sold drugs. Would this affect me?

Also i have a car that got repossessed because i was working a job for two years and didn't get enough time for unemployment and got behind. i only owe 5500 to the bank and i haven't touched any hard drugs in like four or five years and it's been like a year since I've smoked pot. but I've worked on state jobs as a a roofer for two years and was in the military for police and corrections training and had a secret security clearance.

also i had one minor possession charge for seeds that were found in my vehicle like four or five years ago.

I've been married for two years and really want to change my life around. times are tough and i want to make a better life for us and prevent others from making same mistakes i have. do you think i have a chance as a prison guard or a cop? if you could help it would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

By anon76771 — On Apr 12, 2010

OK, I have read every one of these, and I still haven't found my answer.

I would like to become a police officer. I had a DUI six years ago, and after that I never drink and drive. I walk, I take a cab, or I don't go out if I want to drink.

I have had many discussions with officers (off duty) in bars, and they say that it shouldn't be an issue. They drove themselves to the bars, and got plastered, and drove home.

I know that they are officers of the law, not on the clock, but if I do become a police officer I don't want to work with hypocrites like this.

Also, I have a few speeding tickets, most from when I was young, about 20, and this also is a moral issue. I know that most police officers use their badge as a get out of jail free card if pulled over.

I see black and whites (the color of police cars in my city) going a lot faster than the posted limit without their lights and sirens on. Why do you think the lights and sirens are there? It's so you can let people know that there is something going down and you need to break the law to be there in time to save someone in need, or you need to get to the sale at Macy's or something. Either way, use them.

Recently I got pulled over (fix it, flasher was out). It was by the officer that stopped me when I received my DUI. I remembered his name, and I was actually happy. I said "Officer (name here)!" He was taken off guard, and I said "You arrested me years ago, about a mile away!" He said "What, DUI?" I laughed, and said yeah, how is your (insert name of raced out car) doing?"

He took my DL, and checked it. He was very happy to see that I had not had another DUI. I told him that he most likely saved my life that night. Yeah, bromance. whatever. He is a "good, by the book, cop," which most should be.

Either way, I am a very moral person, who likes to help people out who are in need, in good shape, strong, smart, don't use drugs, smoked pot years ago.

I can relate to people, and empathize.

We need more cops like me. Can I be a cop?

How can I convey these facts to the people that may hire me?

By anon76453 — On Apr 10, 2010

i am now a cop but when i was younger i was charged with a DUI but i changed my life, went to college and applied to be a police officer. At the interview I was completely honest and let them know that in previous years i had received a DUI and I still became a cop.

We all make stupid mistakes when we're young, you just have to be willing to change and turn your life around and work towards it. If you've ever been convicted of a felony though, your chances are very slim and if you currently do drugs or want to be a police officer and continue using drugs, you can forget about it.

You're a police officer, and you take drugs off the street, not contribute to it. Maintain a clean record, stay physically fit and join the military or get a degree and possibly get some community volunteer hours under your belt and you would be a great candidate as a police officer.

Good luck all, follow your dreams, don't give up!

By anon76350 — On Apr 09, 2010

First off, me being experienced in the hire process for a certain department, and I'll tell everyone now that if you have smoked weed in the past and not still smoking it, like trying once or twice is OK. any other drug such as cocaine heroine, etc., or prescription drugs like adderall

or any other forms of non over the counter you will be disqualified.

That is on the basis of the department I'm referring to. Also be in good shape physically. The PT tests nowadays are more rigorous than what old timer cops will be telling you.

I have a GED and six years Military Police Training. I also had miscellaneous misdemeanor charges on me as a young adult. In 1995 I changed my life around and have no arrest or tickets since then. Thanks for any and all help.

I'm sixteen with a clean record right now. will becoming an officer help me to join the DEA?

By anon66041 — On Feb 17, 2010

I have wanted to become an officer ever since I was a little girl. When I was little I told my mom that's what I would love to be.

Because my grandfather is a retired sheriff in Detroit and all my uncles are cops so my goals were to become the first lady in the family to become a cop.

But yes, I am young. I'm sixteen and I've done some stupid things but not involved with the law. But there has been a time were something has come up in my household that involved my father. I was wondering if that involves me.

By anon65957 — On Feb 16, 2010

By anon65790 — On Feb 16, 2010

OK I'm 16 yrs old, I'm also a girl. I don't have a wonderful past. I've done stupid things, but I'm trying to get my life turned around. Luckily I've realized i needed to turn things around at a young age, and in this process I've seen how much better life is being drug and alcohol free and being on the good side of the law makes me feel a lot happier than being in constant trouble. So, I've decided I'd love to become a police officer.

But i read the above passage and it says there will be a lie detector test and I'm guessing they will ask about drugs/alcohol. I have done drugs in my past but like i previously stated, i no longer do drugs or drink. will this affect me getting a job as a police officer?

to be a police officer, you don't need any qualifications, so if you are choosing your options and don't know what to take, it doesn't really matter. But if i were you i would take things that would benefit me when joining the police. For example P.E as this would make me stay fit.

you cannot become a police officer until you're 21. you have to go through an academy of your state's choice and you need to be physically fit, psychologically sound and wanting to become a cop for the right reasons.

Too many cops out there are disrespecting the badge. It all goes back to ethics. Would your family be proud of what you do?

If you are a teenager join an explorers program. You just call the agency you wish to become some day and ask about it. It looks good on a resume and you gain a lot of important information.

Yes, the military is always looked highly upon. Most law enforcement officers are prior military without a degree. Any felony is a disqualification.

Why does everybody in here post their age? You don't need people knowing your age on here. As far as all of the questions being asked, read the article! It tells you everything.

If you're still lost then contact your local police department and ask them. They would be able to help you out more than anybody on here. The police also offer a ride along program where you would ride with a police officer for a day or so to see what it's like to be in their shoes. Again contact your local PD to see if they offer something like that. Therr might be an age limit so all of you under 18 years old might have to wait.

By anon49055 — On Oct 17, 2009

That my friend is not true. private security does help help on your way to become a police officer, as I have numerous family members who are cops and I am heading to become a deputy really soon. First of all, you need to fix or work on fixing your credit. most law enforcement agencies are very strict on credit, even if it's not a high score or low as long as you show you're paying it, it shows a good character line in their eyes. Going to school in a community college is what I highly recommend. Don't go to a fancy private college, because it is not respected by major police agencies and you just wasted a good two to four years of school. Also something very important: do not lie. be completely honest on everything they ask you. if they ask why you owe this and that, tell the truth. debt, if times were rough explain that, if you tried let them know. don't say "oh i just didn't have the time to pay it." respond with something like "I was in such a bad place in my life. I didn't have a job, was looking hard and my luck wasn't there so I couldn't pay, but since I am making money now working now I make payments." only if that is the real case, though. remember they will find out. And back to the security response, private security does give you a better chance of landing a police job then just having a criminal justice degree, also military experience helps out a lot, big time. Good luck all, and remember never give up! my motto is, "When you give up on your dreams, you're already dead." For those of you wanting to be a police officer. Go to school. Specifically in the Criminal Justice law enforcement major. For those of you who believe that 'military training' or 'private security' experience is going to give you the edge, it isn't. The main thing they look at is education. If you don't have 60 college credits, they're going to turn you down. It's a very competitive career, and those who will be interviewing you during the hiring process will be quick to dismiss you from their list of candidates when they ask 'What's the level of your education?' and you say 'High school.' I enrolled in a two-year technical college. I have four months until I receive my degree in the applied science of criminal justice law enforcement. The chances of you getting into the law enforcement field without a degree are within the single digit percentile. It's a prerequisite for almost every department. However there is one other option, but it takes a lot of ambition and enthusiasm on your own part. Do community work, see if you can join some community centers, develop rapport within your town or city, join a criminal justice association club, buy their t-shirts, be a nerd about it. Go for ride-alongs with squad patrol officers, ask them questions, you can even walk down to your local police department and if they're not busy; interview them. Make a thing of it - bring a notebook and a pen, jot down some notes or something. Make friends in that area, have them refer you to other sources. And maybe then if you show that you're a pretty penny, they'll flag you into the academy to have you 'certifiable.' This is not the same thing as a 'certified officer.' All this means is that you went through the 520 hours of basic training, took some core classes, and passed all the state required tests. Making you 'certifiable' a.k.a. 'okay we might think about hiring this kid as a junior officer' Or. 'reimburse or pay for his 60 credits.' This career is about honor, not money. You start at 40 grand a year in most departments. But that's if you can get in. They aren't going to hire any guy who's experienced with 'guns' or 'eliminating threats.' These guys are pretty much 'go to guys.' You need directions, a baby's trapped in a burning car, there's a chemical spill, some guy just mugged an old lady, old man is griping about his neighbor's dog, domestic disturbance (which is the one call that officers are most likely to encounter fatality, surprisingly), kids starting trouble and need a good talking to, bank robbers with fully automatic weapons have taken hostages and your wife is in the building; first responder on the scene. These dudes *need* to be sharp. Most of the old guys are grandfathered in, either they knew someone or they somehow skipped a few important chapters in the 'what an officer should be' area. Want to be a cop? You need to learn some things first. Enroll, learn, and drive at it.

Re: Question 108. I would go into the police force as soon as you can get accepted and take criminal justice classes part time while an officer. By the time you are ready to move into an higher position (maybe 4 years) within the department you will have already had the life experience (which is the best experience) and several courses or even a degree under your belt to help you qualify. Going to college first and then becoming a cop will take more years (precious in this field). I'm already 37 and I can't believe how fast the years have gone by. If you focus on your goal and work hard there's no limit to what you can accomplish. Forget the military. They tell you where you live, eat and breathe. You have no choices. Once you sign up with them you will be theirs for life.

By anon41685 — On Aug 16, 2009

I have seen in the past year here where I live in Ohio that police departments are taking in people with just a high school diploma and then training them. Of course you still have to have a clean record and background. The police departments are now getting grant money from the government to put people through training. So now you don't have to go to college before hand because now people with a high school diploma have just as good a chance to become a police officer as someone who went through college.

For those of you wanting to be a police officer.

Go to school. Specifically in the Criminal Justice law enforcement major.

For those of you who believe that 'military training' or 'private security' experience is going to give you the edge, it isn't.

The main thing they look at is education. If you don't have 60 college credits, they're going to turn you down. It's a very competitive career, and those who will be interviewing you during the hiring process will be quick to dismiss you from their list of candidates when they ask 'What's the level of your education?' and you say 'High school.'

I enrolled in a 2 year technical college. I have 4 months until I receive my degree in the applied science of criminal justice law enforcement.

'reimburse or pay for his 60 credits.'

This career is about honor, not money. Most of the old guys are grandfathered in, either they knew someone or they some how skipped a few important chapters in the 'what an officer should be' area.

Want to be a cop? You need to learn some things first. Enroll, learn, and drive at it.

Hi all, I am a 23 years of age, a recent college graduate and I got arrested for DWI when I was 19. (March 2005). I completed all of the necessary probation requirements to receive a PBJ (probation before judgment). I have documentation showing that the charge was dismissed. I applied recently to become a police officer and told my investigator up front about my arrest and she assured me I was fine. She then began my background check and called me and said my background came back fine and I made it through to the next phase of the physical and psycological exam. I then received an email about two weeks later saying I had been disqualified because of my DWI charge in March of 2005. She then recommended I apply again in 2010. What is this 5 year mark I keep hearing about? I can't find any answers online regarding it? And what was the point of me getting probation if it's going to haunt me for the rest of my life?

Once you reach High School, ask your guidance counselor to show you what classes to take which will provide a strong foundation for this career. Ex. Criminal Justice, Forensics, etc..

- anon36510

Looks to me like VCE is mandatory, and about VCAL, that is like a literacy test, so as long as you know English well you should be fine.

After reading all these questions... it amazed me that people have the same question: If they are ineligible for this career, mostly due to a minor offense during their youth years. Can't you just read the question and not re-post it?

If i had admin rights to this mini blog/forum, I'd delete all the questions which are practically the same.

OK since i got that off my chest, here is my question.

Background info:I'm 16 years old, I'm a captain of my high school's lacrosse team(we are number 1 in our region), my record is clean(no drugs, no arrests, nothing...), I have an A-/A average for all my classes(I just finished my sophomore year)

I'm 5'11, and weigh 160 lbs.(perfect physical condition, I have 5% body fat)

So here are my questions:

Q: After obtaining my HS diploma, should I go to college and receive a Bachelors in Criminal Justice?

or

Q2: Go to the military(army) as soon as i finish HS and work as a MP(Military Police)?

or

(I don't know if this is possible, but... here it is.)

As soon as i finish HS, go in the army and join the MPs, and take an online course to get some kind of degree?

I would greatly appreciate an answer from a person who has experience in this field.

im 18 years old. im curently attending college and im majoring in criminal justice. i can speak 2 language, english and spanish and im studying french. however, im not a us citizen, im a permanent residnent. i just want to know if it would be an imconvenience for my goals

By den2001 — On Jun 25, 2009

My husband is European but is a permanent resident of the US. He was dishonorably discharged from the military in his country ten years ago, because of a few things on his criminal record in that country like petty theft and he got arrested for a street fight, he only had to pay some fines, no jail time. Anyway this was all about ten years ago, will this prevent him from becoming a sheriff/police officer here in the US? Before he was discharged he did extraordinary work in the military (special forces) and has a lot of experience that will make him a great asset in the police force, he just did stupid and regretful things as a young man. He applied for a few departments but did not mention his criminal record or discharge on the applications because he assumed the background check would be a US background check, not in his country of origin. He has a concealed weapons license in many US states, and that's why he assumed the background check in Europe is not done. The problem now is does he fess up to these things at the interview he was called for next month or just hope it won't show up? Obviously he feels he should be honest but he doesn't want this to deter them from hiring him as despite his past, he knows he made stupid mistakes but knows he'd be a great officer. Any advice?

By anon29294 — On Mar 30, 2009

In depends on the state in which you work. In Ohio you *can* have a DWI/DUI, after 5 years and no more than one, *you could* have been charged with *anything* as long there was no convicted. A past probation does *not* DQ you from becoming an officer. It all depends on what it was and how long it's been, etc....

Don't stop trying. If you're a convicted felon, well that pretty much speaks for itself. DV convictions that prevent you from owning a firearm *will* keep you from working as an officer. Hope this helps someone.

OHIO

Police Officer.

Do financial backgrounds have any effect on one's eligibility? I have never been convicted of a felony nor do I have any traffic violations. Ive never been in any trouble but I do have student loans and such from college. Would any type of financial matter bar me from becoming a police officer?

By anon26273 — On Feb 10, 2009

Viper20, no it is not an automatic disqualification, but it depends on what you are on probation for. Now, not having your high school diploma or equivalent be it GED, will go a long way. Since you were told you could never own a firearm, that may be your killer right there. Not being able to own a firearm is the same as never being able to carry a firearm. I recommend, if you are seriously interested in pursuing law enforcement, that you look into having your record expunged, but that is only if it was a minor offense. But once again, seeing as how you were told you could never own a firearm I am guessing it was a major offense. To anyone that asked about marijuana, *no that does not make you ineligible*, be truthful in the interview and the lie detector.

It is good to see so many people interested in Law Enforcement. Keep your nose out of trouble and you will be just fine.

here is something about being a police officer.

If at ANY time you went to Probation or Community Supervision for any reason that is an automatic disqualification, you can never become a police officer. If you are an illegal alien you cannot become a police officer. Also If you have a DUI, DWI, Unlawful carrying of a weapon and any Assault that is also a bar. Lufkin Police Officer.

Curious: two part question

24YOM No record, high school graduate, history with Fire department, 911, and EMS! I've taken 2 civil service exams with two separate agencies, failed one passed the other. The second department sent me for POPS (the physical agility test) but I missed one portion of the test by just a few seconds. I'm trying to get into shape for a retake. Our state requires 18week course in the academy. But I'm just not making any progress in my physical abilities. I'm having trouble with adding speed and endurance to my running, and my pushups! I need to make a 300 meter in 65 seconds, and a 1.5 mile run in 17 min and 12 secs. Also the pushups require 20 consecutive with out stopping. I'm a bigger boy about 6'3 265lbs. What can I do physically? I've considered creatine to help me but I don't want to hurt myself.

2nd part-

I also have a history of depression as a teenager like 15 years old and to this day have problems with anxiety! I take medication that keeps me pretty regular, but will that hurt me in the psychological test? I haven't made it that far in testing process yet and I'm concerned that will pull the plug on me- also they do a background check which legally I know I'm fine- 1 ticket for speeding under 18 years old, but what about bills. I have a lot of medical bills against me! Will those medical bills kill me?

Please help, I want nothing more than to serve my community as a police officer, and do something I and my children can be proud of!

P.S

also curious in the State of Kentucky, can you become a police officer without going through the police academy? and in Kentucky do you have to be sent to the police academy by an agency? or can you go on your own in KY?

By anon23287 — On Dec 20, 2008

Okay so if you're not out of High school yet you really can't do much accept for HS internships but for you who are wanting to pursue this at a young age you will have to wait till your out of high school 18 or older and go to a college who offers crim. Justice Graduate out of you associate's degree but most departments and states REQUIRE you to have a Bachelors degree in "Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice (BSCJ) with a concentration in Law Enforcement" Which is what I had to do and most of us had to do to become in law enforcement im 30 years old took me just 4 years of college to get into the career I dreamed of. I don't think an accent will make you ineligible to be a police officer. Of course, it matters if your speech is extremely unclear. Otherwise, it shouldn't matter.

I am 18 and i've always wanted to become a cop. However i am a girl which i know doesn't matter but i am only 4'9 as of height i am short. can i still make it? I am planning to take my G.E.D because i did not continue my senior year and i am willing to take as much training as possible to become a cop. I play a lot of sports and i love to work out also i am very healthy i think i can make it but i am too short can some one give me feedback?

Hey I m 25.. I m looking to go into a career in law enforcement. I m awaiting 2 charges for DUI's will I be disqualified in looking into this field?

By anon20683 — On Nov 04, 2008

Being a police officer has always been my dream, but shortly after i turned 18 i got a possession of controlled substance fine because i got busted with marijuana but was not arrested... How bad would that hurt my chances of becoming a police officer?

By anon20329 — On Oct 29, 2008

I am 15 and have wanted to become a police officer since I was 7, I have been looking around various sites to see how I could take my first steps in becoming a police officer and have found most of which on this site but I am still unsure about where to go in order to start these courses ans whether or not I can get to that specific area as my family has no car and so no real means of transportation so it would have to be relatively close by. Also regarding the qualifications required higher school means GCSE's does it not? and would A levels then be enough instead of a Bachelors degree?

By anon19537 — On Oct 14, 2008

i am doing a research project on becoming a police officer. it is my understanding that if you were convicted of a felony that you are not allowed to be a law enforcement officer.

By anon19386 — On Oct 11, 2008

A lot of you have worries about smoking pot or trying drugs in your teenage years, like it was said before some departments have loosened up on it but if you used for a long extended amount of time you are unlikely to get hired. Cops deal with and handle a lot of drugs on busts and under circumstances and having a background heavily coated with drugs is not going to get you far in this field. However experimenting with it once or twice a while back isn't going to be such a big deal. If its your dream to be a cop don't let past mistakes get in the way, make sure your acts clean up prepare yourself physically and mentally and pursue the field of Law Enforcement. good luck.

I'm 15 and I've done coke a few times will that disqualify me later if i apply for a job and tell them about that?

you're 15 and have done coke a few times, I think what you should do before even trying to become a police officer is go to rehab and get your life straight, no one is going to want a little kid that is doing drugs like coke

For all of the people who want to find out how to get involved in the police department. There is a program that is called Police Explorer which most of police departments offer. The police explorers is for 14 to 20 year olds, who want a first hand look on police work. There is much more about this program, but I don't have the time to tell you. Check it out at your local police department, you understand me.

For People with criminal records....Long story short I was 16 years old and got charged and convicted with Intent to distribute Class D. After that arrest i decided to turn my life around.(which i did a great job at that) however i am now 20 years old with that record completely cleared up. I have since gone to school to receive my EMT- Basic certificate and would have liked to take a course to become a paramedic. Four years later emt certified and looking for a job. Ive applied at literally 10 private EMT companies who have since turned me down due to that one mistake. One of which company my brother is an EMT at. So i decided i would take a paramedic course and let the time weigh out a little bit. Come to find out im unable to take the course because i would be ineligible to take the exam. Honesty isn't always the best policy i guess. and Also don't get your hopes up. You can TRY to convince people you're an honest law abiding citizen but it only gets so far. People aren't even willing to look at you with a past criminal history

By anon16771 — On Aug 14, 2008

A lot of you may wonder if you can still join or if it will affect you, in reality if you tell the truth and your past isn't your present, you might still have a chance. Clean your act up and do work son.

I'm 15, I have a record, a simple assault and 10 counts of conspiracy to commit burglary in the 3rd degree. What can I do to start my dream of being a police officer and SWAT? I work out and stay out of trouble, but what else?

By anon16519 — On Aug 08, 2008

How does one pursue a career as a police officer at the age of 16 and still in high school? I want to start doing as much as I can early I really want to become one, I have a perfect record.

By anon14365 — On Jun 15, 2008

From my understanding, being convicted of felonies and more serious crimes will, certainly make it difficult for you to pursue a career in law enforcement, but not necessarily disqualify you. I believe departments simply want to know that you have changed or are willing to change and no longer commit crimes. They do not want you to be a distraction.

I have 7+ years combat arms experience with deployments to iraq in the military, I am more than capable and qualified to do the job of law enforcement and will be soon, the question is, about 10 years ago i was admitted to psychiatric care following an aspirin overdose. It was an idiotic childhood attempt for attention i suppose but now i am worried it may ruin my dreams of serving my community back home as a police officer. will it? or has it been so long and so petty that it will not be a concern? should i just pretend it never happened? i have a secret clearance so i know its beneath all, but im worried about the lie detector test. thank you

By AirAssault — On May 18, 2008

First off i'm a SGT in the 101st Airborne Div. I've done 2 deployments in Iraq and i'm currently in Afghanistan. My question is being in the military, will that help me become a Police Officer even though I did some drugs when I was younger prior to military?

When I was 18 I was arrested on a warrant for unpaid fine for underage drinking when I was 17.

Also when I was 18 I was arrested for getting in a domestic dispute with my step-father he was also arrested will these arrests affect my chances of becoming a police officer?

I got into trouble before I turned 18 I have no record now, but in my younger days I got some Gang related Tattoo's on my chest and down my body. Will this affect me being able to become a police officer?

By mbk — On Apr 10, 2008

OK so you want to become a police officer? it might help to read my book first. The title is Past the Uniform. it will help. I did 34 years in the most exciting thing you can do dressed career.

Ever wonder what it is like to be on the other side of a 9-1-1 call? Come along for the ride. View the world through the windshield of a patrol unit and behind the yellow tape of crime scenes. Past the Uniform is autobiographical, and for those wishing to enter the exciting, ever-changing and challenging world of law enforcement, it is a fabulous resource. Join a new recruit and his field training officer as they face the joys and frustrations of society as it cries out for help. See life within the hushed society of the police organization. Discover the hurdles facing someone fresh out of the academy. This is an inside look at the human side of being a police officer, past the uniform, the standoffish blue wall of fabric. Roll call is over and we are now ready to patrol.

I have been convicted of habitual truancy in school twice. Ive never been send off or went to a juvenile, or detention center. But i am on probation and have to serve 1 day in a detention center for every day i miss of school until im 18. Will this affect me in being able to become a police officer in any way?

By anon11116 — On Apr 08, 2008

If someone becomes a police officer, (if i'm not mistaken) they ARE supposed to stop people from breaking the law. But if i were to become a police officer, would that mean that i should stop other officers that i see breaking the law? (i.e. speeding, lack of directional, running a stop sign, or red light, etc.)

By anon11092 — On Apr 08, 2008

i've gotten in a few fights in school, will that affect my chances of becoming a police officer?

By anon10273 — On Mar 24, 2008

OK. I've stolen 4 times in my life. Once when I was 7, 3 years ago when I was 19, I stole some beer when i was 20, and I stole a few dollars at work when I was 16. What are my chances of becoming an officer?

By Momz — On Mar 17, 2008

Can you get disqualified if you got in a fight 2 years prior to applying to a P.D. Even if it was self defense and you told the truth about it?

When i was 12 i got busted for shoplifting and the cops had to come. And when i was 15 i smoked pot a lot and then i stopped. Will that effect me in the future when im applying for a career in policing? Thanks

By anon8787 — On Feb 20, 2008

when i was 16 i was arrested for theft and B&E, my record was kept clean and i did my probation with no problems at all...will this affect me in anyway for becoming a police officer?

By jkoehler707 — On Feb 11, 2008

can i still become a police officer if i have absolutely no training and have not taken any criminal justice classes?

By anon6821 — On Jan 09, 2008

I was really young and stupid and got caught for shoplifting can that affect my chances of becoming a police officer even though it would be my juvenile record?

By olivia — On Jan 04, 2008

when researching the question that many readers posted about previous drinking and drug use, i found that every police department across the nation has slightly different requirements and policies pertaining to this. for the most part, it appears that many departments have loosened up their policies somewhat when it comes to "youthful indiscretions" such as pot smoking and drinking. what is important to note, is that they prefer these to be PAST indiscretions, and not currently ongoing.

so, if you are hoping to join the police force - which is a great aspiration - clean up, and stay that way. you'll increase your chances of getting accepted, starting a great new career, and serving your community!

By anon6616 — On Jan 04, 2008

Hi there!

I'd like to know if since i'm a teenager at the age of 14 & i've smoked pot & drank & never been busted will that affect me in the future?

Thank You Very much for your time

By anon6204 — On Dec 19, 2007

I have had a lot of traffic violations and a couple of accidents; however, I haven't had any tickets or accidents or anything for a while. I still have another year before I finish college, and it will be probably 2-3 years since I've had a ticket at that point. Will my past driving record screw me even though there has been an obvious change in my behavior?

By anon6116 — On Dec 16, 2007

if i have smoked pot for the past 3 years but i have come to the realization that being a cop is something I want to do. Would this kill the idea of me wanting to be a cop?

By anon5966 — On Dec 11, 2007

Duis do not necessarily make you ineligible. it depends on local standards. (DUI are typically misdemeanors)

By anon5458 — On Nov 26, 2007

How about outstanding speeding violations... will that give a person difficulty becoming a police officer?

By anon5231 — On Nov 17, 2007

Hey y'all...I'm seeing that some of you that tried pot once or whatever.... and they ask you if you have ever did drugs, if you just did pot once....don't lie, tell them the truth. I promise you will be OK. In the police work trust is very important......and if you got a dui sorry about your luck sir....

By anon5217 — On Nov 17, 2007

Your Juvenile record cannot be used against you once you're 18. If you were tried as an adult then it can be.

By anon5143 — On Nov 14, 2007

So if you did drugs while you were young can you still become a police officer or does that not matter as long as you can pass a drug test?

By anon4999 — On Nov 08, 2007

Shocked no one answered the first question asked. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BECOME A POLICE OFFICER if you are ILLEGALLY in the United States.

1. Become a U.S. citizen

2. Good on you, for wanting to become a police officer :)

By anon4971 — On Nov 07, 2007

I know this sounds stupid, but I shoplifted some game cards when i was 11 years old. Would that make me ineligible? Please respond.

By anon4853 — On Nov 04, 2007

I tried marijuana once when I was a teenager. I shop lifted once too. I would readily admit to these things in a an interview or lie detector test. Would this make me ineligible?

By anon4602 — On Oct 24, 2007

If I plead guilty to an assault as a young offender, had my record expunged (had no other offenses), served my probation without hiccup, and graduated college, do I still have a chance to be a police officer?

By anon4253 — On Oct 09, 2007

yes...dui will make you ineligible.

By anon3290 — On Aug 21, 2007

if i got a dui 2 years ago will it affect my wanting to be a police officer ???

By anon1252 — On May 22, 2007
